The Mindful Athlete by George Mumford Book Review

I came across this book The Mindful Athlete: Secrets to Pure Performance by George Mumford and in this week’s podcast, I will share with you the inspirational passages I highlighted in this book.

Now, if you are a basketball fan, you would know who Phil Jackson is – amazing coach of former NBA champions Chicago Bulls and LA Lakers. He brought in George Mumford to transform their game and start winning.

George Mumford had a very interesting beginning – he was playing basketball for the University of Massachusetts when injuries forced him to walk away from the game he was truly passionate about. Things at home weren’t helping as his dad was an alcoholic so George started doing drugs starting from marijuana to pain medications like heroin. Through meditation, he was able to kick the addiction away.

Now, George is a well-respected public speaker and sports coach and in this book, he shares his story and strategies. Countless of basketball players, even the great Michael Jordan himself, credited Mumford for changing the way they played the game. His proven techniques transform the performance of anyone with a goal, be they an Olympian, weekend warrior, executive, hacker, or artist.

Below are some of my best highlights in the book to guide you through:

  • A lot of athletes think the trick to getting better is just to work harder but there is a great power in non-action and non-thinking. Just be fully present in the moment. – Phil Jackson
  • Life is available only in the present moment. Thich Nhat Hanh – what matters is what we are doing now.
  • Learning about stress management.
  • We are all chipping away to get to our masterpiece even if we grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. – you can become whoever you want.
  • We all have divine spark within in us. – there is something in us that we should express. Slowing down and thinking, “What do I really want to do in my life?” Our passions may change.
  • Buddha – my teaching is not a dogma. It is a method to teach reality, it’s just a finger pointing at the moon.
  • He talks about Buddha’s Eight-Fold Path and his 5 Spiritual Faculties: Diligence, Faith, Mindfulness, Concentration, Insight
  • Each of us is a completely unique creature.
  • Open your funky mind.
  • No one told him when he was young that he can alter his mind – he turned to drugs.
  • We emerge into the light not by denying our pain but by walking through it. Joan Borysenko, PhD
  • The only way out is always through. Robert Frost
  • There might not be the right time to start. – it’s the journey, the first attempt might not work, the second might not.
  • But as many of us know, taking little steps into the right direction eventually you’ll dig results. – start taking baby steps even if you fall down.
  • Be inquisitive – ask questions
  • God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to take the things I can.
  • Listen to your body.
  • If you do follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has always been there waiting for you. And the life you ought to be living, is the one you’re living.
  • Read all the books available aligned to your passion and interests.
  • He talks about the five superpowers: mindfulness, concentration, insight, right effort and trust – the fourth power (right effort or diligence) is the energy that makes us steadfast in our practice
  • Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness by Sharon Salzburg
  • You can train your brain to focus
  • We have evolved to pay attention to dangerous things
  • The minute your mind is elsewhere, the present moment is gone.
  • The brain is a muscle, practice everyday.
  • Baseball is 90% mental, the other is physical, the other half is physical. – Yogi Berri

There are numerous motivational passages in this book that I haven’t covered in this podcast but I’ll leave it to you to discover. I highly recommend this book, it’s not just about sports – the things discussed and written here are applicable to both your personal and professional lives, may it be facing a career crossroads or just simply going through some personal changes.

Interview with Rainey Wikstrom of the Healthy People Project a self-employed interview

Rainey WikstromLearn how Rainey Wikstrom left a job that made her sick and followed her passions to help kids and people be healthy while creating her own career speaking, coaching and consulting.

Rainey went from a job that was making her sick to a career she controls and that aligns with her purpose and passion. She gets paid to speak, consults and coaches.
A great quote from Rainey “I never want to be in the position where my values and what I cared about didn’t line up with my income stream.”

She connected with a life coach and wrote a mission statement for her life. Learn how she created her career that aligns with her passion and purpose
.
Hint she asked “What does I want to do?” instead of “What can I do?”.
She mentions how movement helps her feel so good. This reminds me of the book ‘The Miracle Morning’ which says to include movement every morning.

She followed her passion by taking action to help her kids school be healthier which lead to more and more opportunities for her dream career.

She talks about much more including knowing when to say no.

You can reach Rainey at 1000 Healthy Schools.

Finding business and life motivation with Jack Canfield The Success Principals

I am pumped about everything I’ve been learning.  I’m currently reading Jack Canfield’s book “The Success Principals”

Some productivity techniques from Jack:

  • Write down five goals or five tasks for each and everyday.
  • Get Accountability Partner who you review your goals and tasks.

Also write down your life goals.  Add to the list as you think of more.  Share what you love and what your find inspiring.

You can buy his 10th anniversary book here and get some bonus content including the first two chapters as a download along with a couple hours of Jack talking and answering questions. The Success Principles Book

If you are on Instagram follow us @YourBusinesssPodcast for daily inspiration and tips.   If you are interested in farming and homesteading follow us @RegenFarms.

Recently I signed up with Michael O’neal’s “Solo Hour’ which is an online mastermind group.  In a group like this you get help with your business questions and you get to network with other people who are also looking to be successful in business.

I also discuss online business ideas like selling an eBook and creating other forms of digital media.  Remember you may not consider yourself an expert but if you know more about a topic than other people then you can teach them.

And I discuss using Instagram for your business, passion or hobby.  I’m using an app on my iPhone named ‘Word SWAG’ to add text to my photos and to get backgrounds for sayings.

I also talk about working on discipline for my business and passions.

Jack also suggested adding a new habit to an existing habit to increase your success.  Example every time you brush your teeth do some push-ups.

Have a great day and make your list to get more done!

A great new book to read and apply ‘The Success Principles’

The episode is found here Jack Canfield. Jack is the coauthor of the ‘Chicken Soup’ series of books and has been very successful. If you order the 10th anniversary version you get some bonus content including a video and audio of Jack answering questions. Also the first two chapters of the book as a download. See Let me know if you get it, have it and how the principles are working for you.

In this podcast I share my excitement over Jack’s new book and my thoughts on hanging out with people you want to be like, they are people you can learn from.

Are you a geek and if so are you following your geekiness? Find Passion and Motivation.

This podcast explores the following along with examples.
Are you a geek when it comes to certain things? If so I hope it aligns with your profession and job. If not then hopefully you can change that. Recently I realized I’d consider myself a geek when it comes to farming, specifically regenerative permaculture farming. This aligns well with the farm I’m establishing www.RegenFarms.com

Are you a geek about things that are negative or things that don’t help you at all? If so time to change where you spend your time and energy.

If fear motivates you it probably will not keep motivating you. You will need to find something positive to maintain momentum.

Do you have a passion for food? Are you a foodie that could make money growing food?

This podcast should help you think about how you could turn your passion with food and plants into income and maybe a business. If you have a passion for gardening or cooking food with certain herbs or plants maybe you could be growing some of these for yourself and others.

This podcast covers many topics including:

  • Growing Garlic
  • Growing Mushrooms
  • Growing Trees
  • Raising Chickens – even in the city
  • Top Ten Profitable Specialty Crops –

I had not heard about micro greens when I recorded this podcast so here is a podcast of a guy making $2,000 a

    week

:

Follow your passion to find success in business which leads to your freedom.

This podcast covers developing your passion into a business which can lead to more freedom for you. Some ideas are proposed from photography to kid camp. I turned 40 in 2014 and many of my friends are about the same age. Several have mentioned the lack of passion they find with their job/career. I’m happy to encourage everyone to follow their passion. I think you should focus your efforts to create a website, YouTube channel or business. You may already be taking the time to post of Facebook or YouTube rather than spending that time with your own blog/website where you can eventually monetize it. You might eventually have many followers and sell them eBooks, T-shirts or something else.
Biggest key take some action, the more focused and consistent the better.

Track your time and find some for something new and productive

This episode covers a number of thoughts to help you change your habits and use your time for something productive. I bet you can find time to get ahead.

“The trick in life is not to trick yourself” Dennis Prager

Try something new. Listen to, read or start learning something new that you will look back in a year and be glad you invested your time.

I found myself reading the same websites each and everyday and those websites were not teaching me anything that helps me in any way. Instead if anything it just let me know the bad news each and everyday. A few weeks ago I changed my habit from the old sites to any site or youtube video that I was interested in learning about.

I also talk about a photographer we use who makes her living with her camera. Is photography your hobby and your passion? If so you should and you can make money with your camera.

Do you multitask? I’m writing this post while watching the NFL playoff game. You could be adding a post to your website, researching businesses that you would like to run. On your commute you could be listening to podcasts or even youtube videos. I listen to many youtube videos rather than watch them. Do you listen to music or the radio at work? You can change
